Remember the 1970’s Mills n Boons plots? Or for those of you who haven’t chanced upon these less-than-200-page novellas, the storylines always involved some young girl from a genteel background who would always accidentally ‘chance upon’ a super wealthy, worldly-wise, cynical tycoon or landlord, always a playboy, who in turn would have ‘designs’ on the young lady and seduce her only to have both parties fall in love with each other and do they ‘happily ever after’ round!
Arranged marriage, in many ways, has many of the above-mentioned possibilities, in terms of mystery, sudden-ness, being caught off guard and none-the-worse-for it, and of course the novelty aspect. There is the flutter and nervous excitement of being introduced to a new person …. knowing that this may well be ‘the one’; there is the how to look best on that first date or meeting – without giving out the impression to the other party of any effort being put into the matter at all..!! find their own groove and end up going the happily ever after route!
